Sirens screamed as police arrived on the scene, but Lucas had no time to waste. Forcing himself to his feet, he stumbled to the car. Miraculously, the doors were unlocked. Ignoring the burning metal, he tore open the car door and tugged on the baby’s car seat. The little child screamed and coughed as smoke filled his face. Lucas couldn’t yank the car seat free. He had no choice but to reach over into the burning car and unbuckle it. Lucas covered his mouth and nose with his shirt and lurched over the seat. The smoke blinded him and stung his eyes. Tears clouded his eyes as he felt around for the seat belt buckle. His burning fingers finally found the hot metal buckle, and he pushed. The car seat came free, and Lucas tumbled to the ground with it.
